The Examination
We check for oral cancer by checking, lymph nodes, your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and floor of the mouth. We also examine the skin of your face and neck.
We check your jaw joint (TMJ) and your occlusion (how your teeth fit together) as well as an orthodontic evaluation.
We take the necessary X-rays and photographs. We use an intra-oral camera and digital photography to show you what we have found in your mouth.
Periodontal Examination: (gums and bone around your teeth). The tissues that support the teeth.
Dental Exam: Finally, we look at your teeth. Previous fillings crowns, and other restorations. We note the condition of the dentistry that has been done before.
We note any missing teeth, failed restorations or new decay that needs attention.
Treatment Plan: We then decide together what needs to be done first and what can be postponed. I call this co-diagnosis. I want you to be aware of the conditions in your mouth and why the work needs to be done.
Plan on staying for 1 1/2 hours. Many patients exclaim after their initial examination that they have never had such a thorough examination.
